Passive Solar Residential Design: A Hybrid of Straw Bale & Timber Framing

This beautifully conceived and executed home was designed and constructed by John David Duffié for himself and his wife, Connie. The structure is a hybrid of straw bale and timber framing, blending natural materials with contemporary craftsmanship.

A Contemporary, Organic Approach to Sustainable Living

The design concept was rooted in the couple’s desire for a home that felt both modern and relaxed, while embodying passive solar residential design principles and alternative building methods. Every decision—from materials to layout—was made to minimize environmental impact and energy use.

Energy Efficiency Through Passive Solar Principles

The home was built to require little or no energy to heat or cool. By using straw bale insulation, strategic window placement, and thermal mass concrete floors, the design naturally moderates indoor temperatures without mechanical systems.

Straw Bale Walls and South-Facing Windows

The exterior walls are constructed from thick, stucco-clad straw bale sections that stop short of the corners, which are infilled with wood and glass.

  • South-facing windows maximize solar gain in winter.
  • East-facing glass captures the pastoral and mountain views

This thoughtful orientation enhances both energy efficiency and connection to the surrounding landscape.

Natural Cooling Without Air Conditioning

Summer cooling is achieved through passive ventilation and shading:

  • Roof overhangs block unwanted summer sun.
  • Operable clerestory windows promote air circulation.

By opening both lower and upper windows at night, warm air is vented out while cool air is drawn in, chilling the concrete floors. The floors then retain the cool temperature throughout the day, keeping the house comfortable—no air conditioning required.

A Model for Sustainable Home Design

This home exemplifies how passive solar residential design can merge aesthetic appeal with environmental responsibility. By leveraging natural materials and smart design, it achieves a comfortable, low-maintenance lifestyle with minimal energy consumption.
