Ashland Police Department Facility

The City of Ashland, Oregon, approved plans to expand and modernize its Police Department facility to better support community safety and operational efficiency as a modern public safety facility. The expansion was designed in two phases. Phase 1 involved remodeling a portion of the existing 6,400-square-foot building and adding approximately 3,000 square feet to the north, extending into the existing police impound area for a total footprint of roughly 9,400 square feet. The addition was designed to match the original structure in both appearance and materials, creating a cohesive architectural identity that reflects civic integrity and functionality.

The parking area was also redesigned to improve circulation and accessibility, while the existing police vehicle carport was relocated within the same site to maximize space efficiency and maintain security for police vehicles.

Designing for Modern Public Safety Facilities

Modern public safety facilities, such as police stations and detention areas, require a thoughtful balance of efficiency, resiliency, and comfort—three elements essential to long-term functionality and community service.

Efficiency

Well-planned layouts support quick response times, logical workflow, and safe movement for staff and visitors. Durable, low-maintenance materials and energy-efficient systems also help reduce operational costs while supporting sustainability goals.

Resiliency

These facilities must remain fully functional during emergencies. Design considerations such as reinforced structures, backup power systems, and secure circulation zones ensure continuity of operations under all conditions.

Comfort

Creating a balanced environment that promotes wellness is equally vital. Comfortable workspaces with natural light, controlled acoustics, and secure yet welcoming public areas help improve staff morale and foster positive interactions between law enforcement and the community.

By integrating these design principles, the Ashland Police Department’s expansion serves as a model for modern public safety design—combining practicality with thoughtful architecture to enhance operational readiness, community trust, and long-term resilience.
