It is both an honor and a privilege for CDArchitects to contribute to the legacy of one of Southern Oregon’s most cherished architectural landmarks—the historic Jacksonville Presbyterian Church.
This exquisite example of Victorian Gothic architecture has stood as a symbol of faith and community since its dedication in 1881. With its hand-crafted brickwork, timber framing by local builder David Linn, and the iconic 1,000-pound bell brought from San Francisco by C.C. Beekman, the church has long been celebrated as “a model of architectural beauty” and “the most ornate and handsome church in Southern Oregon.”

Adding Functionality to the Jacksonfille Presbyterian Church
The Jacksonville Presbyterian Congregation approached CDArchitects with a vision to thoughtfully expand and enhance their campus while preserving the integrity and historic charm of the original structure. The proposal includes a new covered outdoor/indoor pavilion, situated between the existing sanctuary and classroom buildings. This structure will serve as a functional and welcoming connector—a primary entrance from the parking area that provides sheltered access to both buildings. Designed with sensitivity to the historic context, the pavilion will also function as a reception space, post-service gathering area, and special event venue, creating new opportunities for fellowship and community engagement.
In addition to the pavilion, the project includes six new classrooms, expanding the church’s educational facilities from eight to fourteen. These spaces will accommodate preschool, children, young adult, and adult programs, supporting the congregation’s growing ministry and outreach. Additional storage areas for landscaping tools, recreational equipment, and seasonal decorations have been incorporated to improve organization and functionality.
For CDArchitects, participating in this project is a rare opportunity to blend historical preservation with modern functionality—to enhance an enduring symbol of Jacksonville’s heritage while ensuring it continues to serve future generations. The design celebrates the church’s storied past while creating a more connected, accessible, and vibrant campus, reaffirming the Jacksonville Presbyterian Church’s place as both a spiritual and architectural cornerstone of Southern Oregon.
