Embracing Southern Oregon University’s vision for a dynamic campus hub, the McNeal Pavilion project delivers functionality, innovation, and community connection. CDArchitects partnered with Perkins & Will Architecture (Denver, Colorado) and worked closely with university leadership, faculty, student-athletes, coaches, and staff throughout the design process. The emphasis on collaboration, stewardship, and sustainability produced an efficient, energy-conscious facility that strengthens recreational, academic, and athletic programs while reflecting SOU’s spirit.

State-of-the-Art Transformation
More than $30 million was invested to modernize the 60-year-old McNeal Pavilion. The project achieved LEED Gold certification through the U.S. Green Building Council, creating a sustainable landmark for the campus.

- Three-story, 100,000-square-foot main building
- Competition gymnasium
- Two-court recreation gym with two-lane suspended running track
- Group exercise rooms

Additional Upgrades
The existing dance building auxiliary gym and racquetball courts received comprehensive overhauls for improved accessibility and functionality. A new second story was added to provide dedicated athletic office space. Preservation Efforts
Prior to construction, project teams carefully assessed the aging structure and implemented protection plans for historic elements, including the original wooden gymnasium floors. This transformative project modernizes Southern Oregon University’s recreational infrastructure while honoring its legacy, delivering a vibrant, sustainable space that serves students, athletes, and the broader campus community for decades to come.
